Dental Problems

Dental problems and emergencies can happen, even if you’re flossing and brushing your teeth two times a day. What’s important is to understand the signs and causes of common dental problems and schedule your routine dental cleaning. And, if you’re worried about any of these dental problems or are experiencing any symptoms or tooth pain, make sure you go visit your local dentist.

Tooth Decay

Cavities, or tooth decay, are one of the most common dental problems you’ll encounter. Many people will end up with multiple cavities throughout their life. They form when the plaque on your teeth combines with sugars or starches from the food you eat. But cavities can also come from other conditions, like dry mouth of medications. The important thing with cavities is to get them filled before they become a bigger problem.

Tooth Infection

If cavities or tooth decay are left untreated, they can turn into an infection of the tooth. This is when the root of your tooth is filled with bacteria and damages the nerves and pulp tissue inside your tooth. When your tooth gets to this point, you’ll need a root canal. This is where a hole is drilled into that infected tooth to remove the infected tissues and nerves and refill that tooth with a tough material.

Bad Breath

While bad breath might just feel like an embarrassing part of waking up in the morning, it can also be a sign of certain dental conditions. That bad breath smell can come from excess bacteria on the tongue, gum disease, cavities, dry mouth, or even oral cancer. If you notice that you have persistent bad breath in the morning, consider calling your local dentist to have it checked out!

Gum Disease

Gum disease occurs when the gums around your teeth become infected. While everyone is at risk for gum disease, people who are over the age of 30 are at higher risk, along with smokers. Some common signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Receding gum lines
  • The appearance or formation of deep pockets between your teeth and gums
  • Teeth that start to move, shift, or become loose
  • Gums bleeding after you brush

If you’re worried that you’re at risk for gum disease, the best way is to regularly visit your local dentist to check on your gum and continue brushing and flossing your teeth twice each day. As soon as you experience signs of gum disease, call your dentist.

Oral Cancers

Oral cancer is a serious dental problem, but it’s also important to keep in mind. Many cases of oral cancer begin as a small, pale, pink lump inside your mouth. At this point, the lump is painless which might make it easier to ignore this sign. But if you notice anything new or unusual inside your mouth, schedule an appointment with your local dentist to take a look. If you do have oral cancer, catching it in the early stages lets you start the treatment process faster.
